چکیده

In the application of UREX+1 process, technetium will be separated together with uranium and iodine within the first process step. After the separation of uranium, technetium and iodine must be immobilized by their incorporation in a suitable waste storage-form. Based on recent activities within the AFCI community, a potential candidate as waste storage form to immobilize technetium is to alloy the metal with excess zirconium. Alloys in the binary Tc-Zr system may act as potential transmutation targets in order to transmute Tc-99 into Ru-100. We are presenting first results in the synthesis of metallic technetium, and the synthesis of equilibrium phases in the binary Tc-Zr system at 1400 °C after arc-melting and isothermal annealing under inert conditions. Samples were analyzed using X-ray powder diffraction, Rietveld analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe micro-analysis, which allow us to construct the binary Tc-Zr phase diagram for the isothermal section at 1400 °C.

Separation of Technetium from Uranium and Waste Form Synthesis

In the Advanced Fuel Cycle Research & Development (AFC R&D) activities, the uranium extraction (UREX+1) process is proposed as one of the most promising technique to separate transuranic elements (TRU) from light water reactor spent nuclear fuel in the years to come. The isotope Tc will be separated together with U within the first process steps. After the separation of U, Tc must be immobilize...

Solvent Extraction Process Development for Partitioning and Transmutation of Spent Fuel

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), along with other national laboratories, has been developing a solvent extraction process for partitioning of spent fuel constituents to lead to safer and cheaper disposal of high-level waste. The process, known as UREX+, separates key radionuclides from dissolved spent fuel into: (1) uranium for disposal as LLW, (2) technetium for disposal as HLW, (3) iodine f...

Technetium chemistry in the fuel cycle: combining basic and applied studies.

Technetium is intimately linked with nuclear reactions. The ultraminute natural levels in the environment are due to the spontaneous fission of uranium isotopes. The discovery of technetium was born from accelerator reactions, and its use and presence in the modern world are directly due to nuclear reactors. While occupying a central location in the periodic table, the chemistry of technetium i...
